One of the most important things for people to know if they are planning on becoming healthier by incorporating more fruits in their diet, is how to get rid of the wax and pesticide coating covering many store-bought fruits. Fruits with smooth edible skin tend to be sprayed with pesticides (chemicals) to keep away insects and other pests. However since the skin also tends to be more nutritious than the pulp, simply peeling the fruit is not always the best solution. Knowing how to wash the fruit using natural ingredients can be very helpful.
Here are three techniques that will help you clean your produce:
1. In the sink add one part white vinegar to three parts water, and allow your produce to soak for 10 to 15 minutes. After this time rinse the produce and know that it is ready for consumption.
2. In a spray bottle, mix one table spoon of lemon juice with one teaspoon of baking soda and one cup of clean water. You can squeeze the lemon juice out of a fresh lemon if you do not want to buy the juice ready made. Spray down your veggies. Make sure that you do not miss any spots. Allow the water and lemon residue to sit for a minute on the surface of the fruit. Then rinse. Lemon juice is not only natural and delicious, but also a great antimicrobial agent.
3. Add several spoons of sea salt to several cups of boiled water and wash your produce thoroughly before you consume it. Make sure that the number of tablespoons you add to the water corresponds to the number of cups of water that you will be using. Rub the surface of the skin gently with your clean hands as you are doing the washing. Refrigerate or consume your produce. Sea salt is a great natural disinfectant that is unlikely to affect the taste of your food.
Either one of the above techniques should help you eliminate 98% of the pesticide residue, bacteria and wax coating on your fresh food and make it safer for for you to eat. Remember that even organic fruits can be grown using pesticides. They are simply pesticides of a different variety.
