Recently I have decided to try out the juice-only fast. Having tried other fasts before, the prospect of nourishing and detoxifying my body at the same time sounded very appealing. Although I was not as pleased with the fast as I expected to be, I noticed something very peculiar about the way it progressed. I was losing weight noticeably quicker than on any other fast I previously tried. Given that the juices I was drinking were made up of what some would label “negative calorie foods”, I decided to research further into the subject.
Negative calorie foods are not foods that have no calories, nor are they foods that have so few calories that you can burn them off by chewing. Negative calorie foods speed up the rate of your metabolism and lead to better nutrient absorption.
The greater potential value then, in identifying and ingesting these negative calorie foods is not in their ability to break down other existing calories in digestion at all.
The true potential benefits lie in the increased enzymes produced being absorbed through the mucosa in the small intestine thus entering into the bloodstream where they can positively effect the rate of metabolism.
In building upon the above conjectures, to optimize this metabolic acceleration, these researched & identified negative calories should preferably be ingested in the absence of additional enzyme robbing “empty calories” (junk food). This would insure that an optimum amount of enzymes are produced for absorption into the bloodstream and not wasted during digestive processes on assimilating calories from foods with poor vitamin and nutrient content.”*
This possibility, for me, would also go a long way in explaining why, despite consuming 3000 calories a day, I have always weighed substantially less than avarage. Of course age and genes have played their part in this, but it is unlikely that they were the only factors. 30% of my diet has always consisted of fruits, berries and vegetables. These have aided the digestion of less healthy foods. Not to mention the increase in metabolism that comes as a result of eating several times a day.
While more studies will be needed to know if negative calorie foods lead to weight loss in everyone, it is clear that they are nutrient rich foods that are generally good for you.
