I decided recently that it was time to give my digestive system the opportunity to cleanse itself and went on a one week fast. I consumed two cups of home made kefir and one cup of carrot juice with pulp every day. I also drank half a cup of water with baking soda and vinegar. Here is the summary of my experience:
DAY 1: I go on with my day as usual. My energy levels are high and I experience no hunger. I sleep well.
DAY 2: No debilitating side effects to my fast. I feel mild hunger a couple of times during the day, but it goes away quickly. I sleep well.
DAY 3: I wake up early in the morning and feel the urge to vomit. However nothing comes out since my stomach is empty. I feel very nauseous, light headed and low on energy. I decide to give myself an enema to help my body detox. Even after this no relief is felt. I marvel at the extent to which people can take their health and the blessings it brings for granted. I hope for some relief after the toxicity crisis passes and spend the day napping.
DAY 4: The crisis has passed. My skin has a glow to it and my eyes look clearer and bigger. I no longer feel nauseous and am not as light headed. My energy levels are still quite low and I spend the day at home playing with the kids and reading.
DAY 5: The only side effect I experience is the low energy levels. I spend another day at home taking it easy.
DAY 6: I decide to let myself enjoy my slimmer figure and spend the day playing dress up. The kids join in and we have a blast. Who needs food anyway.
DAY 7: Today I let myself have a cup of apple juice. This gives me the energy to join my family on their trip to the beach. I have lost three and a half kilos and weigh just over 50kg. Though weight loss was never my goal. I can feel and see my abdominal aorta and I have assured myself that my abdomen feels soft to the touch.
DAY 8: Today I eat only fruit and nuts and drink vegetable juices. My body needs time to restart the digestive processes. After abstaining from solids for a week, a meal of fruits appears filling and delightful.
DAYS 9-20: I go back to eating my pescatarian diet. I make sure to swim for an hour a day to help my body jump start my metabolism. I end up gaining a little weight, but am still slimmer than before.
Conclusion: I am glad that this time I found the will to do a fast instead of a juice feast. My body really needed some time off from all the sugars and this fast accomplished that to a small extent. My gut flora is healthier. I would recommend any novice attempting a similar fast to do so under the supervision of an experienced nutritionist. I have completed many fasts in my life, and for this reason I trust myself not to need supervision.
